Carbon Footprint Calculator
What you eat is an important part of your carbon footprint - your calorie intake and food choices both affect your foodprint. Based on 2,600 calories per day, the average American diet has a foodprint of about 2.5 tons of CO2 per year.
A Vegetarian’s foodprint is about two thirds of the average and almost half that of a meat lover. For a Vegan it is even lower. But perhaps most interestingly, eating chicken instead of beef cuts a quarter of emissions in one simple step.
Here we provide five sample diets to help determine your foodprint.

Your vehicle is another significant part of your carbon footprint, accounting for approximately 30 percent of the average American's carbon footprint, at 5.16 tons per year.
CO2 emissions from flying are especially troubling. These emissions are released high in the atmosphere and are thought to have a greater greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide emissions released at sea level. The carbon dioxide emissions from flights are therefore doubled.
The third largest factor in your carbon footprint is utilities. The amount of carbon dioxide emissions depends on the type of utility and on the number of people in your household. To simplify the estimates, we use your average monthly utility bills.
The rest of your carbon dioxide emissions come from a variety of sources, but they do add up! For the average American, these total about 3 tons of CO2 each year. Again, to simplify the estimates, we use your average annual spending.
Based on your responses, the total amount of carbon you are adding to the atmosphere each year is as follows:
Your Foodprint CO2 Emissions (tons/year)0.10
Your Vehicle CO2 Emissions (tons/year)5.13
Your Flight CO2 Emissions(tons/year)0.00
Your Household Energy CO2 Emissions (tons/year)0.00
Your Other CO2 Emissions (tons/year)0.00
Offsetting your carbon footprint is easier than you might think. Global climate experts agree that forests are an essential part of fighting climate change - and we are losing them every day. Here's how many trees you'll need in your forest to offset your annual emissions:. If you don't have that many, we'll plant and care for them - a donation to one of our projects puts trees in the ground and rescues species from extinction.
